Le succès de Notre-Dame de Paris de Wallace Worsley (1923), où Lon Chaney incarnait un saisissant Quasimodo face à l’Esmeralda de Patsy Ruth Miller, l’acteur, surnommé par Hollywood “l’homme aux mille visages” en raison de son don de maquillage. Le roman de Gaston Leroux, Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, fut choisi, la réalisation du film confiée à Rupert Julian ; celui-ce venait de se faire un nom en terminant un tournage commencé par Eric von Stroheim, lequel fut brutalement remercié par les studios.

Ce Fantôme de l'Opéra allait devenir l’une des plus belles réussites commerciales d’Universal dans les années 1920, au point qu’une version sonorisée en sera réalisée en 1929, le plus célèbre étant, en 1974, Phantom of the Paradise de Brian de Palma.

Pour cette plongée en compagnie du Fantôme, Jean-François Zygel – bien connu du public pour ses émissions de radio et de télévision – improvisera au piano l’accompagnement de la projection.
